About
Toshusai Sharaku (active 1794-1795) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist known for his striking and highly expressive portraits of kabuki actors. He was active for a very brief period of time, producing only around 140 prints during his short career, but his work had a significant impact on the development of ukiyo-e.
Sharaku's portraits were highly individualistic, and he had a particular talent for capturing the unique personalities and expressions of his subjects. His prints often featured exaggerated features and bold, dramatic lines, which added to their expressiveness and emotional impact.
Despite his significant impact on the world of ukiyo-e, Sharaku's identity remains a mystery. His work was only produced for a short period of time, and he signed his prints with a pseudonym, making it difficult to trace his true identity. It is believed that he may have been a well-known artist working under a pseudonym, or perhaps a theatrical designer or actor who briefly turned his hand to printmaking.
