About

Totoya Hokkei (1780-1850) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist who worked during the late Edo period (1603-1868). He was a member of the Utagawa school and one of Hokusai’s best known students. His prints depicted beautiful women, landscapes, and scenes from Kabuki theater.

Hokkei's bijin-ga prints were characterized by their elegance and refined style, and he was skilled at capturing the grace and beauty of his subjects. His prints were often accompanied by poems or other text, which added to their overall aesthetic appeal. Hokkei was also known for his landscapes, which were characterized by their delicate use of color and atmospheric perspective.

Despite his significant contributions to the world of ukiyo-e, Hokkei's life and work have not received as much attention as some of his contemporaries, such as Utamaro and Hokusai. However, his work remains highly admired for its beauty and refinement, and he is recognized as one of the important artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
