Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist known for his innovative, striking, and often gruesome prints, as well as his technical skill and attention to detail.

Yoshitoshi was born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and began his career as a student of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi. He later struck out on his own and developed his own unique style, which was characterized by bold, vivid colors, intricate detail, and a strong sense of drama and emotion.

Yoshitoshi's prints often depicted violent and gruesome scenes, such as battles, executions, and supernatural creatures. He was known for his ability to capture the horror and intensity of these scenes, as well as his skillful use of color and composition to create a sense of drama and tension.

Yoshitoshi's later years were marked by personal and financial struggles, but he continued to create prints until his death in 1892. His work had a significant impact on the development of modern Japanese art, and he is considered one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e.
