About

Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist who lived from 1786 to 1865. He was one of the most prolific and versatile artists of his time and produced an enormous body of work, including prints, books, and illustrations.

Kunisada was born in Edo, present-day Tokyo, and started his career as an apprentice to the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Toyokuni I. He later adopted the name Toyokuni III to honor his teacher, and eventually changed his name again to Kunisada.

Kunisada's artwork covered a wide range of subjects, including kabuki actors, beautiful women, landscapes, and historical scenes. He was especially known for his portrayals of beautiful women, or bijin-ga, which were highly popular with the public. His prints often featured intricate details and patterns, and he was skilled at creating dramatic and dynamic compositions.

In addition to his artistic talents, Kunisada was also a savvy businessman who understood the commercial potential of his work. He established relationships with publishers, actors, and other artists, and was able to produce and distribute his work on a large scale. He was also known for collaborating with other artists, including his close friend Utagawa Hiroshige, on joint projects.
