About

Winslow Homer was an American painter best known for his realistic depictions of the sea and the natural world. He was born on February 24, 1836, in Boston, Massachusetts, and died on September 29, 1910, in Prouts Neck, Maine.

Homer was largely self-taught as a painter, but he initially worked as an illustrator for magazines and newspapers, honing his skills in drawing and composition. He began to paint seriously in the 1860s, focusing on marine subjects such as shipwrecks, fishing boats, and seascapes.

Homer's paintings were notable for their realism and their ability to capture the power and majesty of the sea. He often used strong diagonals and contrasting light and dark colors to create a sense of drama and movement in his works. He was also interested in the social and political issues of his time, and his paintings often explored themes such as race, war, and the role of women in society.
